The name “Skardu” is believed to be derived from the Balti word meaning “a lowland between two high places.” The two mentioned high places are satpara lake and shigar city.

It is located along the Kohistan-Ladakh terrane, formed as a magmatic arch over a Tethyan subduction zone that was later accreted onto the Eurasian Plate.

The Balti ruler Ali Sher Khan Anchan accepted Islam and brought it to the area at the beginning of the 16th century. Islam grew and eventually took over as the predominant religion in Gilgit and the neighboring regions.

Best season to visit skardu?
There is no specific answer for this question because everyone has their own personal experience and personal choices and activities we do generally. Actually, the best and peak tourist season is from May to September, when the weather is pleasant and the roads are clear from glaciers. During May to September, the days are usually long and clear blue sky can be seen so we can explore the natural sceneries very well and memorable in the summers.
May and June often have moderate, pleasant weather, with daily highs of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (65 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the ideal time of year to walk and take in this amazing region’s splendor.
November marks the beginning of the winter season, which ends in March. Although many roads and hiking trails are blocked during this time of year, it may still be a great place to visit if you prefer winter activities like skiing and snowboarding.
I think that summer is the best season to visit skardu because weather will be moderate, days will be longer, sky will be clean, no fear of stones throwing from mountains etc.
How can I reach to skardu?
Skardu is located in the northern areas of Pakistan. The easiest way to get there is by plane or by air. Here I recommend by air because the journey is too long by road and it will be very tiring journey and there will be also shortage of facilities like shops, petrol pumps, hotels and restaurants etc.
By Air:
The quickest and most comfortable way to reached skardu is by air or by plane. Pakistan international airlines (PIA) and air blue, operates daily flights to Gilgit. It takes just one hour from the Islamabad airport with amazing and heart catching sceneries of Himalayas and the plains. You can take flight from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad as well.
By Road:
Traveling by road will be little bit tiring and longer. It takes 18 to 20 hours from Islamabad to skardu. But I must say that you can explore many others attractive tourist hubs on the way to Hunza like you can explore the beauty of Mansehra, Abbottabad, Naran kaghan, Babusar top if you will traveling by road. The distance between Islamabad and skardu is 570 kilometers. Traveling by road can may be challenging in different places.
Tips before going to skardu?
- Best time to visit skardu is from May to September.
- Try to travel in planes instead of cars and buses.
- If you are traveling by road than keep all the necessary goods with yourself because the distance is too longer.
- Try to keep extra petrol in the large bottles for cars and buses otherwise you will suffer.
- Keep extra food with yourself.
- Try to communicate with the locals for information of tourist destinations..
- Try to travel with just 4 humans in the car because the distance is too long so, you will may suffer and will be disturbed.
- Keep first aid box and necessary medicines for safety.
- Downloads many movies to cover the distance without hesitating and if you are interested in reading so, carry book with yourselves.
